Weekly News Report

The Daily Mail has reported an article about an alledged rapist and pedophile by the name of Arif Chowdury who had raped a vulnerable 13 year old girl in the UK. What's to note is that the writer, Tom Wyke, doesn't introduce the pedophile's name in the headline until he gets to the bodytext of the article, instead referring to Arif Chowdury as a ringleader of a gang. The use of language here that is used at the very beginning of this article in the headline is an indicator of the ideology that the daily mail inhabits over when reporting about young people committing crimes, with the additon of the opinion leaders being the writer of this article (Tom Wyke), enforcing his own ideology onto the audience, persuading them to believe in his own point of view about the event/incident.

The sub-headings below the headline help sum up the article into bullet points, making it easier for the audience to understand what the convicted man had done. The bullet points that the writer has made are used to cause a negative response within the newspapers audience as he describes what the man has done and how he had fled out of the country to Bangladesh after he was arrested. The reprecussions following this article can cause people living in the United Kingdom with a negative representation that all of them are rapists and pedophiles, probing people to have the idea that all Asian people are the same.

The image used in the article displays a picture featuring Arif's face in a hoodie, which youth tend to wear. From this image alone, the audience can notice through the visual codes alone that from what he's wearing we can associate with delinquents and criminal behavior, backing this up from an example of most youth committing crimes wearing these hoodies and tracksuits during the August 2011 riots. The negative connotations used in the bodytext of the article describing Arif as 'evil' and 'violent' further envokes the audience's hate towards him and possibly other innocent people of Bangledesh descent in the UK. This use of emotive vocabulary is used to create an impact on the readers and persuade them into what the ideology of the newspapers believe.

  1. This is good. You stated the source and what aspects the writer has used to endure the audience and to represent the negativity of the storyline. However, you did not state you opinion on the story, although it may be easy to guess as this is a horrific event. Nonetheless, you structured this well and gave a good explanation of it all.
